Who Pays for AOC’s ‘Abuela-Care?’

This is a case study in “Socialist Compulsion Policies” versus classic American voluntary Do It Yourself.

Joseph Wulfsohn reported on Fox News on June 4 that “Matt Walsh launches fundraiser for AOC’s ‘abuela’ after Dem blamed Trump for home damage from Hurricane Maria.” AOC tweeted that she visited her grandmother (Abuela in Spanish) in Puerto Rico. The roof was leaking, and buckets caught the leaks. Predictably, she blamed Donald Trump: “Hurricane María relief hasn’t arrived. Trump blocked relief $ for PR.

Her solution? “We immediately got to work reaching out to community advocates and leaders and following the money.” In other words, more government activities and government investigations.

Let’s take a deeper dive into this specific Orwellian memory hole. According to a BuzzFeed January 19, 2020 post,

Puerto Ricans have been accusing their government of withholding and mismanaging disaster relief supplies and funds for years. About a year, after two powerful hurricanes slammed the island in 2017, killing nearly 2,000 people and leveling entire neighborhoods, videos posted by Radio Isla showed about 10 shipping containers full of food, water, and baby supplies meant for storm victims rotting at an election commissions office.

Hurricane Maria relief arrived a long time ago. It has been rotting in warehouses mismanaged by the Puerto Rican government. Trump doesn’t manage those warehouses.

The Root Cause? Government Bureaucracy

So the root cause is government bureaucratic mismanagement. AOC’s solution? More government. The common-sense approach I learned long ago is “When what you are doing doesn’t work, don’t do the same thing harder. Try something different.”

While AOC wants to do the same thing harder (more government), enter Matt Walsh with a direct DIY (Do It Yourself) approach. He started a Go Fund Me page for AOC’s grandmother and raised $100,000 in less than 12 hours. More than enough money to repair the roof. Private voluntary action solved the problem in 12 hours. The Puerto Rican government hasn’t solved it in three years.

Voluntary Action vs. Government Compulsion

Matt Walsh took voluntary action. He was a leader. Others followed his lead and voluntarily contributed money. Now there is enough money to solve the problem for AOC’s Abuela. Matt forced no one. He contributed $499 of his own money. He did not propose raising taxes on everyone else to fund a new government program of “Abuela-Care.”

This is the classic American voluntary “barn-raising” approach to helping those in need. You see a person in need. You help. Do It Yourself vs. Government “Make Everybody Else Do It For You.”

In the name of ‘compassion,’ AOC and fellow Socialists want to confiscate your money by adding more taxes and distribute it as they see fit. You see the typical result here: food rotting in warehouses because of government bureaucracy. Bureaucrats didn’t pay for it themselves, so they aren’t concerned with the waste of rotting food intended as hurricane and earthquake relief.

The Substitution of Government for Family

“We take care of our own” used to be the motto of families. Now the knee-jerk response is, “let the Government do it. That’s why we pay taxes.” Notice that this is AOC’s response. Matt Walsh pointed out that his donation of $499 is one month’s lease payment on a luxury Tesla Model 3 like the one AOC drives. She drives in luxury while her grandmother’s roof leaks. She takes no responsibility. In effect, AOC is saying that taking care of her grandmother is your job, an American taxpayer, not hers.

AOC blames others for her grandmother’s roof but does nothing herself. Matt Walsh does something himself. AOC wants taxpayer coercively funded government action. Matt Walsh took direct action with his own money.

Which one is more compassionate? Which one cares more about family? Which approach gets the job done? Which approach requests your voluntary help, and which approach forces you to help?

DIY is Distinctly American

Frenchman Alexis de Tocqueville toured America in 1831. In his book Democracy in America, de Tocqueville wrote, “Wherever at the head of some undertaking you see the government in France, or a man of rank in England, in the United States you will be sure to find an association.” Meaning an association of individuals taking voluntary action to solve a problem or further a cause. Not government forcing you. Not “a man of rank,” a duke or baron asserting the elitist privilege to tell you what to do. A voluntary association of individuals.

Matt Walsh, de Tocqueville would be proud of you. You are following a distinctly American tradition of voluntary DIY response to a need.

Michael McCarthy

Michael McCarthy is a life-long student of liberty, limited government, and free-market economics. As a young man, he taught and crewed at the Flint School aboard the 156’ two-masted schooner Te Vega sailing in Europe. Atlas Shrugged was required reading.

In 2010 he saw the acceleration of big government control in politics, business, and culture. Hoping to reach the next generation through fiction entertainment, he wrote the prophetic novel The Noah Option. Powerful politicians target brilliant black scientist Dr. Grace Washington. Her story continues in the sequel, The Rainbow Option, when powerful elites unleash a deadly virus on unsuspecting Americans, and Grace must develop a cure. In The Timshel Option, ISIS invades and creates The New England Caliphate, making women second-class citizens. One teenage girl fights back.

"The things I predicted in my novels came true in the nightly news. Our country is in trouble. Like Abraham Lincoln, I hope for a new birth of freedom,” says McCarthy.

Keyboard Valor: The Epitome of Cowardice

Keyboard Valor: The Epitome of Cowardice

Keyboard warriors are easily identified by their propensity for name-calling and character assassination. They pride themselves in spouting the latest propaganda, thinking themselves experts on every topic that they “studied” from the latest CNN review. As we forge ahead, seeking to spread truth on liberal social media platforms, we can expect a barrage of insults, false accusations, and are character defamation…

We Are Becoming a Colony of China

We Are Becoming a Colony of China

For the past thirty years, China lured manufacturers into making their products in China. How? Cheap labor and currency manipulation to make the yuan cheaper than the dollar. The catch was that American companies had to send their blueprints, molds, machine tools, and engineering specifications to the Chinese sub-contractors in order to manufacture there…

Absence of Truth Guarantees Failure – The China Virus

The Chinese Colonels continue, “Quickly control the epidemic in China while overwhelming economies of other countries: stop production lines in factories; cause stock markets to fall while buying companies at bargain prices. Destroy other markets and be ready to capture them in every way. After all, you’re already prepared with an antidote.” The Chinese Wuhan Virus traveled the world from Wuhan but barely singed Beijing or Shanghai. The Chinese Stock Market didn’t crash. American and European Markets did…

Redefining Biology vs Ideology Through the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act

Bill SB 1028 applies the requirements to interscholastic, intercollegiate, intramural, or club athletic teams or sports that are sponsored by a public secondary school, high school, public college, or university institution. “As a father of two daughters, I want my girls, and every girl in Florida, to compete on an even playing field for the opportunities available to young women in sports.” – Governor Ron DeSantis.

Public Schools are Training Pavlov’s Dogs – Not Students

SEL and CRT are just fancy names for behavior modification. A psychological trick used to elicit the appropriate required response for an action. All the child does is learn the responses approved by the textbook company. No innovation, no creation, no competition, no thinking outside the box. Now every child must think inside the box. There is no room for individuality which is its purpose…

The 1619 Project – Which Argument Wins the History Lesson?

The 1619 Project – Which Argument Wins the History Lesson?

The 1619 Project says that “in August of 1619, a ship appeared on this horizon, near Point Comfort, a coastal port in the English colony of Virginia. It carried more than 20 enslaved Africans, who were sold to the colonists.” The first slaves, according to them, to arrive in America. The author/activist of the article, Nikole Hannah-Jones, won a Pulitzer Prize for her work. So, it must be ground-breaking information based on facts, right?

The Unholy Trinity of Healthcare

The Unholy Trinity of Healthcare

If we want healthcare that is universal and affordable, we have to let the quality suffer, and the more affordable it becomes, the worse the quality will be. If you want healthcare that actually helps keep you healthy, it will either not be universal, or it will not be affordable. Most economists would prefer that we have high-quality, affordable healthcare. Most Republicans want this too. Of course, that means it will not be universal. We have to make trade-offs…

No, Joe, Electric Cars Will Never Power America!

No, Joe, Electric Cars Will Never Power America!

To match the 2,000 cars that a typical filling station can service in a busy 12 hours, the station would require 600, 50-watt chargers at an estimated cost of $24 million and a supply of 30 megawatts of power from the grid. That is enough to power 20,000 homes. And, it can take 30 minutes to 8 hours to recharge a vehicle between empty or just topping off. Will charging station hotels have to be built along our highways for drivers awaiting a full recharge?
