The Left’s Dishonest Strategy to Silence Criticism
If it weren’t for double standards, the Left would have no standards at all. This is ever clearer in light of the Left’s defense against valid criticisms of Ilhan Omar—an open anti-Semite and generally not good person—who recently trivialized the 9/11 terror attack against the USA.
I say that the Left has defended Omar, but perhaps it would be more accurate to say that they’ve merely distracted from Omar by dishonestly accusing her critics of somehow “inciting violence” against her by quoting her. That’s right—conservatives literally just quoted Omar’s own words, everyone got rightly upset at Omar’s words, and so the Left cried that quoting Omar’s words is somehow incitement against Omar. Complete insanity.
This all started after Ilhan Omar gave a speech before the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), an anti-Israel organization, in which she minimized the 9/11 terror attack as simply an event where “some people did something.” Omar’s trivialization of the deadliest terrorist attack in American history understandably resulted in Americans criticizing her.
Eventually President Trump himself criticized Omar by tweeting a video that juxtaposed her speech with footage of 9/11. This caused uproar among Leftists politicians and media figures.
Rather than condemn Omar’s statement, the Left unsurprisingly chose the cowardly and intellectually dishonest route—that is, they attempted to distract everyone with a carefully crafted narrative that any criticism of Omar is incitement.
Socialist Bernie Sanders said that quoting Omar is a “disgusting and dangerous” attack against her. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also a socialist, tweeted that Trump endangered Omar’s life by quoting her, and she even compared Omar’s situation to that of Jews who suffered during the Holocaust. Nancy Pelosi said that Trump’s video, in which he quoted Omar, is “dangerous” and called for it to be taken down. Omar herself said that Trump’s quoting her has encouraged “right wing extremists” to commit violent crimes.
It’s not just Leftist politicians who are pushing this narrative. The Leftist media is likewise spewing the “speech is violence” lie. Chris Hayes of MSNBC accused the President of “actively and willfully endangering the life of a member of Congress” because he posted a video featuring a segment of Omar’s speech juxtaposed with footage of the event she was referring to. Criticizing someone by quoting them is very mean and dangerous, according to the Left.
So are you clear on the rules? Don’t criticize Ilhan Omar’s words—don’t even quote her!—because doing so is an incitement to violence.
This tactic on the Left to deflect criticism is, of course, insane and extremely dishonest. It’s simply an attempt to silence valid criticism by emotionally manipulating the public.
Furthermore, the Left’s usage of this dishonest tactic is utterly hypocritical. I started out this column by asserting that the Left has a double standard. What do I mean?
Well, the people who are currently crying that criticism equals incitement are the same people who devote their entire careers to criticizing the President and conservatives. That’s literally what they do every day, all day, all of the time. Should they be silenced? Of course not. Neither should conservatives.
“But Omar has received death threats!” Leftists shriek.
That, of course, is terrible. And anyone sending death threats ought to be arrested. But that’s not the fault of Trump or conservatives, just like the congressional baseball game shooting carried out by a crazed Bernie supporter two years ago wasn’t the fault of Bernie Sanders. Unless someone literally calls for violence, they are not inciting violence by criticizing someone.
If the Left had any courage and integrity, they would join conservatives in criticizing Omar’s careless words. But that will never happen because Ilhan Omar is a Democrat, and any criticism of Democrats must be silenced. Image: AP Photo
