How To Survive The Teenage Years

Let’s face it! It’s harder today to raise healthy, well-mannered, successful children. There are so many stresses and obstacles to overcome, but many parents are doing it, even if they have to get help, and it’s working. Meet Dr. Sithembile Mahlatini otherwise known as Dr. Stem. She is a licensed Psychotherapist, Motivational Speaker and Author. She is a teen-parent expert who helps teens and parents work through their problems and live a passionate on purpose life. Dr. Stem is also one of the newest members here at America Out Loud and we’re so happy to have her aboard!

I used to think that all of these labels for kids – ADD, ADHD, ODD, were just a bunch of baloney and behavior problems were just a parenting problem – UNTIL I had a child!!!

Well needless to say, I’ve been humbled. The children that are being born today have a way of doing that to parents, which makes our job that much harder but also rewarding nonetheless. One of the main things a parent can do to help their child is to have effective communication with them.

“Don’t let your diagnosis define you. You are not your diagnosis.” Dr. Stem

Parenting is difficult at any time in history but it especially seems so now. There is so much to do and so little time to do it in. This is causing an enormous amount of stress on the oftentimes single parent, and this stress is felt by the children.

Is there a way to effectively parent your children so they grow up to be healthy successful adults? Dr. Stem says there is and one way to do that is to make time to effectively communicate with your child. She discusses this on today’s show.

Another way is to help your child to realize their dreams and passion in life and to help them develop goals of their own that they want to accomplish. This is one of the best ways to help your child grow beyond their label of ADD, ADHD, ODD or any of the other labels that are given to children and teens.

When a child starts to focus on their dream – they have less time to focus on their so-called ‘disorder’ and Dr. Stem teaches teens that they are not their label. This enables them to move beyond their disorder and live the life they were meant to live.

Dr. Stem helps teens and parents with her “Life Plus” program – which stands for:
