Last year outdoor apparel maker North Face rejected an order of 400 jackets from Innovex Downhole Solutions. When asked why? “Because we are an oil and gas services company,” said Innovex CEO Adam Anderson. Oops! In a piece by Breitbart reporter Jacob Bliss, North Face was called out by another CEO, Chris Wright of Liberty Energy, who explained that:

 (1) Every single product made by North Face is made with synthetic fibers created out of oil and gas. So “they’re also a partner with the oil and gas industry,” and (2) “their vast manufacturing, distribution, and retailing networks are also large consumers of gasoline, diesel, natural gas, propane, jet fuel, et cetera.”

So North Face is an active participant in the ecosystem of oil and gas products. View Mr. Wright’s two videos here and here for an excellent explanation of this.

Willful Evasion of Facts

I will give the management of North Face the benefit of the doubt and assume that they are adults who know how manufacturing supply chains and logistics work. After all, North Face is a manufacturer with its own supply chains and own distribution/logistics network. That is their business.

So, they had to know that their jackets are made from synthetic fibers manufactured from oil. They had to know that their products are transported by train and truck fueled by petroleum products.  They had to know that their extreme weather camping customers use propane heaters on their camping trips. They had to know that their own employees and their camper customers travel to camping & hiking areas via airliners and automobiles that burn petroleum products as fuel. They had to know.

North Face Apparel Against Oil? Oops!

How, then, could they reject the sales order from Innovex Downhole Solutions on the grounds that they were an evil “oil and gas services company?” North Face products are created from oil and gas. Without oil and gas, there would be no North Face.

Once again, in the name of “virtue signaling,” North Face could pretend that they weren’t an oil and gas company themselves and refuse to do business with Innovex. Without oil, this woke corporate emperor would have no clothes to sell, literally. This willful evasion of facts is how the left/ progressives/ socialists are able to assert much of their nonsense with a straight face. They compartmentalize “facts” in a separate part of their brain, carefully distanced from the compartment containing “ideology.”

Woke Corporate Emperor With No Clothes

In the famous Hans Christian Anderson tale “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” con men posing as weavers tell the vain emperor that they can make him the finest clothes ever.  However, the clothes are invisible to anyone who is stupid or incompetent at their job. After they give him the invisible clothes, the emperor parades around naked. Everyone is afraid to admit they don’t see the clothing because that would make them stupid. Finally, one small boy exclaims, “But the Emperor has no clothes!”

So even though North Face had to know their clothing is made from oil, they had to pretend it was not. Why? Because like the Emperor’s subjects, they would be worse than stupid if they did not pretend. They would not be “woke.” They would be pariahs in the woke world of environmental social justice activists.

And in the woke anti-oil world, Emperor North Face would have no clothes to sell.

You Can Ignore Reality, But Reality Won’t Ignore You

The brainwashing techniques of the Left enable their followers to conveniently ignore the source of the contradiction: facts.  Hence the CNN reporter stating on-air, “These are mostly peaceful protests” while standing in front of a burning building. “Don’t believe the reality in front of you! Believe what we tell you.”

Will the North Face employees unwash their brains enough to acknowledge the fact that their jackets are made from petroleum? Don’t hold your breath.

Live With Your Answers – A Challenge To North Face

In my conservative novels, I use the phrase “live with your answers” to describe what happens when the Left’s policies catch up with them. So here is my challenge to the owners and employees of North Face apparel: be honest and live with your own answers. Live up to your beliefs.

If your answer is that oil and gas are evil polluters of the planet, then declare bankruptcy and dissolve the company—pay back your stockholders who invested in North Face. Tell your employees they can no longer work for an evil oil-based company. Run ads telling your customers to stop going hiking and camping (since you burn fuel to get to the hiking and camping spots). Run ads to tell your former customers to go back to the older technology of cotton jackets that retain moisture and keep you cold. Stop using that evil polypropylene fiber clothing. Tell your customers to return to down-filled jackets that lose their loft when the down gets wet and keeps you cold. Be honest about your own beliefs.

But don’t worry that we will all be shivering without jackets this winter. The Chinese Economic Emperors will quickly step in with a knock-off product like “Northwestern Face Apparel.”
