Dr Gary G. Kohls is a retired family practitioner, who specialized in holistic (non-drug) and preventive mental health care for the last decade of his career. He has expertise in the areas of traumatic stress disorders, brain malnutrition, non-pharmaceutical approaches to mental ill health, neurotransmitter disorders and the neurotoxicities from psychotropic drugs, vaccines, environmental toxins and food additives. He worked with previously psychologically traumatized, usually malnourished, sometimes seriously neglected (in childhood), and always over-drugged patients who had then suffered the ignominy of being (falsely) labeled “mentally ill” and thus erroneously locked into the “mental illness” establishment with few ways to get out of it.

Meet Dr. Gary Kohls
Dr. Kohls patients came to see him (usually self-referred) because they knew that they had not been helped by their “treatment”. Most of them also knew that they had been sickened by and usually addicted to toxic psychiatric drugs which had caused “adverse” psychotropic drug reactions and serious and very common withdrawal symptoms when they had tried to discontinue the medications on their own.
Over the decade prior to his retirement, Dr Kohls treated over 1,200 patients and developed a unique treatment regimen that involved 1) brain nutrient replenishment therapy (with emphasis on certain specific amino acid therapies – depending on which brain neurotransmitters had been depleted by the previous psych drugs); 2) gradual tapering of the offending drugs; and 3) psychoeducational psychotherapy, usually involving a re-diagnosis of the previous erroneous mental illness labels that had ignored the root causes of the neurological/emotional problems occurring prior to their psychiatric drug treatments.
His approaches succeeded in getting most of his patients either off of their drugs or at least on more tolerable doses and should point the way to a truly preventive type of psychiatry and optimal mental health for patients and society.
