“Like father, like son.”

“Like mother, like daughter.”

These sentiments are often expressed with great joy and pride. Many parents are delighted and honored when their children seek to emulate them. As children grow older and think about what they want to be when they grow up, some choose to be in the same occupation as the parent. There are certain professions that rise above many others when it comes to children following in the parents footsteps. When children opt for the same work roles as their parents, it may present itself as an advantage YET they may also wakeup one day and find themselves on the wrong path. 

Do we need to follow in our parents footsteps? Should their dreams be our dreams too? Should we not break the legacy they made? Should we continue what they started? Our parents’, at their young age, had dreams too. If they accomplished their dream, does this mean we, their children, should continue the progress of their dream? Or if they are not yet done with their dream, does this mean it is our role to finish it for them?

Everything was going along really well in this discussion with Co-hosts Susan Price and DrFaye Wilson — until Co-host Missy Crutchfield realized in the midst of this talk that her son James was now 20 years old. As she was attempting to retrace the steps of his youth — well let’s just say that Malcolm came to the rescue of this Rock Star Young Man.
