Back in the early 1970’s when I was a young person there was an effort underway at that time to make us all more ecologically aware. Little ‘ecology’ flags that resembled the American flag in that it had stripes began to appear everywhere. The field of blue and white stars on the U.S. flag was replaced by a big letter ‘e’, for ‘ecology’ on the Ecology Flag. It was put on shirts, hats, shoulder patches for an Army field jacket bought in a surplus store since actual military service was uncool, and on bumper stickers and coffee cups.
It was something that attracted disillusioned young people who had just seen our nation go through the troubling and self-destructive Vietnam War era. It was something they could latch onto. It was a time when “if it feels good do it”, “Peace and Love”, and “Green Power” were the catch-phrases.
Ecology became the new cool thing to be part of. Colleges began offering classes in ‘Ecological Sciences’, and ‘experts’ in ecology were created. So maybe we should enlighten ourselves and take a look at some of the predictions from back then on Earth Day 1970 by the “experts”:
“Civilization will end within 15-30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind” – Harvard Biologist George Wald
“It is already too late to avoid mass starvation” – Earth Day chief organizer Denis Hayes
“In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution. By 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half” – Life Magazine
“The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age” – Ecologist Kenneth Watt
These are just a few of the ‘Chicken Little’ predictions made by so-called “experts” forty-nine years ago, when America was at the time supposedly engaged in an ‘ecological crisis’. One that was going to lead to the extinction of the human race well before the twelve years that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (affectionately called AOC) recently said that we have left.
With much fanfare this past week New York Democrat Congresswoman AOC, released her ‘Green New Deal’ which she claims will eliminate America’s carbon footprint on the world.
And since “Russian Collusion” isn’t going anywhere for the Democrats as a political issue, AOC’s Green New Deal will help define a new boogeyman for them, “Climate Change”.
If one takes a closer look at AOC’s plan it’s easy to recognize that it’s obviously something right out of a ‘Socialism 101 Class’ promoted at any of America’s ultra-liberal, Liberal Arts colleges. The place where rich young liberals go to feel bad about themselves.
The ultimate goal of AOC’s plan will effectively change America from a prosperous, technologically advanced and groundbreaking capitalist country, into a failed agrarian collectivist country where everyone will equally suffer and starve.
Not to mention turn us into a weak and vulnerable country subject to the domination and control by our enemies who certainly aren’t going to be giving up their airplanes. Or their air-polluting ways for that matter.
The one constant that you can find in any of the programs being promoted by Democrats and their new socialist party leaders is ‘misery’. Democrats are the most miserable people in America. They simply can’t enjoy life, and they hate watching anyone else enjoying it.
If you work hard and prosper and are able to improve your quality of life and lifestyle, then the Democrats resent you for it and want to take it away from you.
They feel compelled to do everything they can to make everyone equally miserable. They’re envious that you’re happy and they’re so damned unhappy!
While AOC’s passion is certainly admirable, it’s also quite certainly misguided. She hasn’t a clue about what she talks. Nor do any of the advisors she relies upon. Man’s actual impact on climate change is still open for debate among many highly credible and qualified scientists and scholars.
The short answer is that the earth’s climate has been changing for billions of years. Change that is a natural part of the earth’s evolution as a planet. And the emergence of man may have little impact. But it sounds good. It’s a subject that can get young people fired up and politically involved.
Maybe the left’s newest little darling Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez should be happy with the fame and fortune she has gained as a result of her little hissy fits. She certainly contributes nothing useful, beyond providing some comic relief.
Or maybe she should just go back to doing something she knows a bit about, like bartending. Yeah, that’s the ticket! In her honor I think I’ll have a ‘Mudslide’, or maybe a ‘Hurricane’!
But I won’t be having any of her Green New Deal nonsense!
