Cancer of the Psyche
There is a silent killer out there. And it isn’t Cancer.
But let’s look at Cancer for a moment. Cancer is misunderstood. There is nothing wrong with cells dividing. Cancer is defined as ‘a disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a part of the body.’ Perhaps you can say these cells have lost their way, or forgot their true purpose to give life, and not destroy life. They are not wrong, nor bad, simply misguided and growing rapidly in the direction of starving out life, rather than thriving. Once these cells get going, the cancer cells spread, divide, and takeover the healthy cells. Without intervention, they will unknowingly devour all the healthy cells they can find.
This is the same as the counter energy to everything you want for yourself and your life and your loved ones. The villain in your head preventing you from living your life fully, or enjoying the life you currently have.
The voice in your head that stops you from telling a loved one you love them. The impulse to eat 5 cookies on day 7 of your healthy eating plan. The stage freight, the snooze button, the writer’s block, rolling your ankle the day before the marathon, the family drama on your wedding day, and so much more.
It is the land of screw-it and I don’t wanna, what’s the point? and what’s the use?
Who do you think you are? and why try?
Some people call this energy resistance. Stephen Pressfield wrote a fantastic book about this in, “The War of Art,” which I highly recommend to everyone who is a human.
Other’s might call it the Devil. Such as in Napoleon Hill’s book “Outwitting the Devil” which is lesser known than the classic “Think and Grow Rich” penned by the same author.
In my Psychotherapy training it was often named ‘The Inner Critic,’or ‘Repressed or Denied Inner Child,’ or ‘Sub-Personalities.’ These can come with familiar terms like the rebel, the perfectionist, the pillar of strength, the joker, etc. These are archetypes that exist within all of us, but some can take over and run our lives when we do not know how to navigate within them. When we do not know who we really are, we can become hijacked by all these other energies and personalities within us.
In Ontological Coaching this phenomenon was named our Survival Mechanism; everything we believed we needed to be to survive. This includes the masks we wear, the ‘being on’ in life, the contorting we impose on ourselves because we simply cannot be who we are. We cannot risk being seen, because we might not be good enough. Then we would be rejected, exiled and die of course. We must fit in and be liked at all costs, including our own self-expression.
In Andean, Peruvian Shamanism we learn there is usable energy ‘Sami,’ and unusable energy ‘Hucha.’ In their culture, you do ceremony to free up the Hucha to make room for Sami- life energy and vitality.
No matter the practice or terminology, when it comes to humans, there is life giving energy, and there is a counter energy commonly called fear or resistance.
So who are we?
We are our Essence. Our core of Being, Soul Self, or True Nature that simply…IS. You have a mind, you have a body, you have a past, you have tendencies, behaviours, personalities. But you ARE your Essence.
When we forget this, we can experience a number of negative symptoms. The main one being, a persistent feeling you are losing time, forgetting something, or never truly fulfilled. These symptoms are actually indicators from your soul to wake up and get re-connected to what really, really matters to you, and to stop out sourcing your truth.
How do you Resist Resistance? The Cancer of the Psyche Toolkit
The way to combat this cancer of the psyche is to grow who you really are bigger, brighter and louder than the other fearful counter-parts. The next step is to manage, not control or fight, the counter energies as they come; the cravings, the moods, the impatience, the procrastination, picking arguments, sabotaging efforts- the ugly, snarky things humans can do when they are not lit from within. Remember, notice, do not control. Attacking something feeds it more energy. You use your human super powers of noticing- also referred to as ‘being the witness’-to separate yourself from the reactionary counter-energy of resistance. When you turn up your light, you burn off the debris.
When you act in ways aligned with your wellbeing and direct your energy to creating things you love, no matter how small or how big, you are winning against your counter-energy. You are curing your psychic cancer. It can only take you over when you let it silently ruin your life by hiding and staying in the dark.
Now go do something you love. Your life depends on it.
