While creating a program about accessing intuition, a participant asked me,

“What is the difference between instinct and intuition? And are they the same?”

Hmmmmmm…

I was flummoxed at the time, I admit.

Just like anything in my life, I activated all my intelligence systems in order to attempt an answer.

I knew the answer was not going to be accessible from my cognitive mind alone, that intelligence system is reduced to information from the past and it is very compartmentalized and only lets in proven, physical evidence.

My Spirit Intelligence system made a lot of sense for the task since I was attempting to pull an unknown question into known knowledge.

So, I put this question ‘out there’ for my Spirit, or higher mind (collective consciousness), to return a suitable answer to me. Spirit Intelligence is kind of like our own personal Google search; We put a clear question into our mind and surrender the outcome by sending it off into the invisible web. Then, magically, a bunch of data comes to us in a response. The internet uses devices, Spirit uses our bodies.

Here it is.

Let’s start with my actual Google search of both of these definitions.

in·stinct

noun

  1. 1. an innate, typically fixed pattern of behavior in animals in response to certain stimuli.“birds have an instinct to build nests”

in·tu·i·tion

noun

  1. the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning.“we shall allow our intuition to guide us”

    • a thing that one knows or considers likely from instinctive feeling rather than conscious reasoning.
The power or faculty of attaining to direct knowledge or cognition without evident rational thought and inference.

As you can see, the definition for intuition made use of the word instinctive.

Both instinct and intuition are the ability to access intangible, non-logical, non-linear data from no perceivable source to guide and enhance our lives in practical ways.

In some cases we sense real-life data that could save our life. In others instances we sense when to turn before a traffic jam or know where a parking spot is

  • Is it instinct or intuition when you don’t go down a suspicious alley way that was fine to go down the day before?
  • Is it instinct or intuition when you get a persistent feeling you need to change your job or ask for a promotion? (when nothing is wrong, or you don’t need more money, you just ‘know’)
  • Is it instinct or intuition when you don’t want to go on a second date with someone who ‘looks good on paper.’?

INTUITION- Spirit, The Universe as a Guide – Our Own Soul-Internet

The ability to sense in our body, heart, and mind information from our Spirit, Higher Mind, God, Guides, Angels that we could not ‘see’ otherwise. Intuition does not need us to believe in it, there are intelligent forces guiding our lives far beyond our limited human comprehension. This is why we are Human AND Being. Intuition is a super power from our Being part, and is a reliable guide for those that employ its infinite capabilities to their own lives. No proof, no evidence, just knowing and listening and trusting. If you listen to genius inventors, artists, athletes, or business moguls you will hear all of the greats attribute their ‘edge’ to intuition. They know how to connect and trust their connection to something that doesn’t make sense at first, but always pays off when applied.

INSTINCT- The Earth- Our Energetic Umbilical Cord to Security, Connection and Guidance

The ability to sense in our body, heart, and spirit, information from the Earth that will ensure our safety or survival. I see instinct as our innate ability to be “spoken to” by the Intelligence of Life and The Earth. I devised this answer from my years of exploration in Shamanism and Indigenous Wisdom from people who have not lost touch with the wisdom of the Earth. They see the Earth as a living being, and the ultimate Mother. They see their connection to the Earth as a sacred relationship. They give, and they receive, and in return they are protected, guided, inspired, connected and loved.

The Earth Wisdom can also include Ancestors, Nature, Animal Spirits, and much more. There has been a surprising rise in popular interest in oracles and Earth Wisdom, #plantmedicines #spiritanimals, which leads me to believe people are yearning to return to their whole selves in order to stop bumbling around feeling insecure and alone because they have unplugged from their roots. Roots in nature provide abundant nourishment and life, roots to our Earth wisdom does the same for humans.

SENSES

Notice how people will use the word sense, when they refer to accessing intuition or instinct. We rely on our Body Intelligence system to access information beyond our five senses and beyond our cognitive left-brain capability. We feel sensations in our body, and just know things when we use our body intelligence to give us useable information to guide our lives.

Unfortunately, too many people do not respect these amazing intelligence systems, because they rely too much on facts and their thinky-mind.

There you have it. There are subtle differences in my opinion, but our ability to access both of our innate powerhouses of guidance are the same.

Be in your body.

Honour your emotions and heart as guidance.

Trust in messages in the form of repetition, metaphor, dreams, symbols, songs, or even billboards that ‘speak’ to us.

Plug in, and tune in, and you too can access the infinite wisdom available to you that  top performing humans have used to their advantage for years to rise above average and fulfill their life purpose.

What if life wanted you to win, to feel loved, to succeed, and be happy?

I think it does, and it is talking to you and me all the time.

I listen, and it has transformed my life.
