Preparing for ZIKA - What You Need To Know! 2

If you’ve been, like many of us, half paying attention to the Zika virus – now may be the time to ramp up your knowledge as Zika takes front and center as a potential health hazard right here in the U.S. The CDC issued a travel warning for Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, where Zika is spreading through the bites of infected mosquitoes. The Zika virus can be transmitted via mosquito bites and via sex. It is known to be the cause of devastating birth defects, including microcephaly, in which babies are born with small heads and impaired brain development. Thousands of such cases have been recorded so far in Latin America, specifically Brazil where the 2016 Olympics are being held.

How contagious is the Zika virus? Can Zika kill you? What are the symptoms of Zika? How do we go about protecting ourselves and our families? We’ll find answers to these questions and discuss the origins of Zika on the show today with Microbiologist Robert Herriman.

Robert Herriman is a Microbiologist with 30 years of clinical, public health and industry experience. He is the editor-in-chief for the news site, Outbreak News Today and the host of the weekly talk radio program, Outbreak News This Week.
