The only life that Trumaine Daniels knew - was Crime

Just before stealing from CVS, Daniels pleading with police. He’d been running from police throughout his life; in and out of jail on a frequent basis. His adolescent years were full of hate and crime. Raised in a family of drug dealers, “I started selling drugs at nine years old,” he said. “I’ve seen my dad and everybody else sell drugs.”

No work. No money. No home. Daniels, a father of four had worked out all the details to rob a local CVS – so that he could in turn feed his family. As he sat in the car preparing to pounce on the opportunity – he couldn’t do it. This time would be different – this one decision would change his life for the better. Daniels broke down in tears as he explained the situation to Officer Brian Lande of the Richmond, California Police Department.

“Mr. Daniels explained to me he needed help,” Lande said. “He became tearful and told me he was hungry, he was living in his car and didn’t know what to do.” Officer Lande talked to the other officers about helping the family to get on their feet. The Richmond,California Police Department came together to buy the family groceries, along with a hotel room – and even treated the family to dinner at a restaurant.

“IF SOMEONE COMES TO YOU AND ASKS FOR HELP, AND YOU CAN HELP THEM, YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO HELP THEM. WHY WOULDN’T YOU? YOU HAVE BEEN PUT IN THE POSITION SOMEHOW TO BE ABLE TO HELP THIS PERSON.” GIL SCOTT-HERON

The brink of an idea! One decision in your life can be a turning point that changes the trajectory of your own life – that one moment that comes down to making the right decision. For Trumaine Daniels, that moment was not only his turning point – but it provided new hope for his family. Always consider all of the consequences in your own life – before leaping to the wrong one.

Again, we’re reminded of the sacrifice and passion that police officers bring to the job. So here is to all the men and women who wear the uniform to serve and protect! Example after example, we discover the courage and heart that police officers deliver on a daily basis across our great nation. Thank a police officer today in your travels!
