When the Constitution was created, it was expected that the members of the House of Representatives would represent the people. To that end, the term of a Representative was set at two years, to allow ordinary citizens, should they be chosen by their neighbors, the ability to serve, then return to “real life.”
Such service was considered a duty, and men were honor-bound not only to serve when asked, but not to make a career out of it. As with so many things in life, this has changed. The siren song of power and influence has not only attracted some of the less savory members of our society, but corrupted good men and women who tried to make a difference.
Washington, D.C., is effectively another world, where the rules of honor, decorum, and servitude seem to be crushed by money, power, and influence. As Americans, we are told we have two choices, join in the madness or get run over by it.
Is there another way forward?
