#32 Talk From The Savage Generation

By third or fourth grade, phones will adorn their style. Texting and social media will have become their first language; handwriting and english will now be considered a foreign language. If you haven’t heard of the Savage Generation – then lookup savage in the urban dictionary and be chilled. Texting and social media require an entirely different set of rules – and if you’re not up on ‘acronym soup’ then your chances of communicating with the ‘in-crowd’ are slim.

Terry Wood, a foreign language teacher at St. Mary’s Ryken High School in Leonardtown, Md., has seen a “dramatic decline” in the writing abilities of her students “due to Tweeting, Facebook, and texting. How big of a problem is this? Should schools ban slang? Does speaking slang impact the youth’s ability to ultimately be successful?

Co-hosts Barbara McGee and Terry Beatley chill out with Malcolm for the hour as they try their hand at savage-speak.
