10 Keys To Your Soul’s Voice

We must recognize and give voice to our Soul’s desire for us and our world. We have to shut off the noise. Because we are an addicted society—addicted to gossip, argument and division—we must start small.

Music is energy, and our Souls make an individual music of their own. Have you heard the song your soul sings? I have shared a lot with readers and clients about the energy of the heart and the brain and how they work together to help us lead a coherent, resilient and intentional life. In my last article on “Mothering”, I asked the question: “Am I being my biggest heart self, allowing my soul to guide my actions? Or am I living a limited, noisy, constantly busy life that consigns my soul to a corner of the room where it awaits my awakening?” In other words, is our soul making its music in the midst of so much noise we cannot hear it?

“Music in the Soul can be heard by the Universe”   Lao Tzu

I promised I would write about the way we access our Soul, particularly through solitude and quiet. I also shared with you my interpretation of the soul in the Celtic way as described by writer John O’Donohue:

“The body is in the Soul. Your Soul reaches out farther than your body and it simultaneously suffuses your body and your mind. Your Soul has more refined antennae than your mind or ego.”

I define those antennae as energy, the Soul’s way of reaching out to create a soulful life. Sometimes I see it is beautiful notes surrounding the body. But if we can’t feel or hear its attempts at communication, how will we ever know our Soul’s purpose? At this crucial time in the life of our planet, and the universe, it’s time to address the importance of the Soul. In the world of the Soul there is nothing but love. Every minute we speak in anger, judgment or fear silences the Soul and stops its influence and energy in our lives. It is essential to be intentional about our lives in order to hear the Soul’s song. And yet, in the everyday world of 24 hour talking heads, the breakneck speed of social media, the shortening of communications through texting and Twitter, am I writing to an audience who may quit reading after the first paragraph?

Maybe not. Maybe there are many more people who are finding a hole at the center of their lives, a place that can’t be filled with chatter, anger, division and finger-pointing. Maybe those of us who feel this great loss have not found one another. Maybe those of us who still cringe at the vicious attacks on Facebook and in the news against those they disagree with can create enough energy to change the trajectory of chaos. One thing is sure: we must recognize and give voice to our Soul’s desire for us and our world. We have to shut off the noise. Because we are an addicted society—addicted to gossip, argument and division—we must start small.

10 Keys To Your Soul’s Voice

#1: Every morning, before you put your feet on the floor, touch in with your Soul. Visualize it however feels right to you: as light surrounding your body or as an animal, bird or butterfly hovering around you. Let your soul tell you. When you can see or feel its presence, ask it to tell you what it wants in the day ahead.

#2: Throughout the day, consciously tap into that instruction.

#3: When you go to bed, check in with your soul and ask how you did on this particular day and accept the evaluation of your efforts.

#4: Then, unless you have decided you’ve reached perfection, ask your soul to strengthen your resolve during the night and begin again the next day.

After you are hearing and are in touch with your Soul’s voice, decide that you will add time for quiet and contemplation into your day. Again, we must begin small. Decide that you will take 10-15 minutes in the morning and at night to find a place where you can be alone and quiet. You can even do a mini-timeout on your coffee break. Try the following in your quiet space.

#5: Check in with yourself and notice all the chatter that is going on in your brain and body. Amazing, isn’t it?

#6: Begin to breathe deeply into your chest. If you can, color your breath in your imagination so you can see it coming in and out of your body.

#7: Expand the breath, breathing it out from your heart and surround your body with this colored light.

#8: Remember a time you felt grateful or appreciative or loving and ask your heart to feel that energy and fill the light with this emotional feeling. Your heart’s job is to feel emotions—you can do this with a little practice.

#9: Now imagine this beautiful emotional light growing and growing around your body. Send it out to everyone in your neighborhood, then everyone in your town, and then around the country and around the world, shining your soul’s light on each and every person without regard for who or what they are. Just send loving energy.

#10: After you finish, sit for a few minutes and tell your Soul that you will attempt to do this as often as you can, until you find being in quiet and solitude to be the most productive version of you possible.

You have begun the process of finding moments of quiet, solitude and clarity in your life. Soon, you may discover your time spent in this beautiful space has grown. With that time, your contact with your Soul will have grown also, and you will find your intuitive self knows more and more what is right for you and what is harmful to you and others. The next step is to put into practice what you have learned. You and your soul will be making beautiful duets!

“Since love grows within you, so beauty grows. For love is the beauty of the Soul.” St. Augustine
